Food Distribution Ministry – Sizer Hall 4:00 p.m., every other Thursday! Please call the church office for details. We Celebrate Our First Year Our Food Distribution program celebrates its first year of service. The program that began providing food to 35 families has more than doubled in size. The ministry is now serving over 75 families with regular food distribution every other Thursday, and the need is still growing. In this uncertain economy, families are faced with the challenge of providing the basic needs of their families more than ever before. Gasoline prices have jumped 30% since last year, leaving low income families, and even middle income families, unable to meet basic living expenses. More expensive energy translates into higher consumer food prices, as the costs of manufacturing and transporting goods rise. And the sub prime mortgage crisis has people struggling to meet escalating monthly payments. The Santa Barbara Food Bank reports serving between 10 and 50% more people in need than just a few months ago. If Calvary Baptist can relieve some of those struggles, we are truly fulfilling our duty to help those in need.James 2:15-17 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Embracing Our LordWhen a person’s physical hunger is satisfied, his spirit is free to embrace our Lord. There is a real need in this neighborhood; many families have just a single parent supporting their family. It is our spiritual duty to serve those in need. Our Food Distribution is every other Thursday. The boxes contain canned goods, rice, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, bread, jelly, fresh fruits and vegetables, sometimes vitamins and toiletry items, and usually a small treat of candy or a baked good. The challenge of starvation is not limited to a particular ethnic group, but is a wide spread issue among the low income and lower middle income group. Some of the recipients of the food boxes have begun to attend our regular worship services as well as our Awana program and our ESL classes. This ministry is very labor intensive; each box is lovingly assembled by several women from our Hispanic congregation for each distribution. Fresh produce, breads, and dairy products are picked up the morning of the distribution.
