Our Team, 2008 As many of you know, our latest Mexico Outreach was, once again, an amazingly fruitful experience. I never cease to be amazed at what God does in both the lives of our team members, and in the lives of the many that we have the privilege to meet. Our God is continuing to do great things, and experiences such as those we have had in Mexico remind me of the importance of reaching out… reaching out of our comfort zones, out of our own culture, out of what is ordinary. The experiences often wake us up to what truly is on the heart of God: working in us a deeper love for Him and for others.
Espiranza Family For those of you who have not heard about our trip, here is a brief summary of what went on. We left Santa Barbara on Saturday, March 29 and traveled to Tijuana, Mexico. The next day, Sunday, we ministered at an orphanage, which is also a church (Iglesia Cristiana Bethel). We led a children’s program with skits, music, Bible story and craft. We then led the church service, where students shared in testimonies, dramas, and I shared a message out of Philippians 2. What an amazing day! We truly felt connected with this small little church and knew that despite the cultural and language differ-ences, we were a part of the same family.
The next three days we spent building a house for the Espinoza family. They worked alongside our team throughout the build, which allowed us to form a close relationship with this family. On Wednesday afternoon, after finishing the house, we had a celebration and lunch for the surrounding community. Our students performed dramas and shared in testimonies. Pastor Rolman then shared the Gospel with the crowd, and many received Christ as their Savior. What a wonderful day!
We spent our last day in Tijuana at a home for the dying and elderly. It was more like an orphanage for the aged. Our team was overwhelmed by what we witnessed… so much hurt …so much suffering. We spent a few hours that day painting, cleaning, and ministering to the people. It was very eye-opening for us all, and a vivid reminder that we all need to be a part of caring for those who can’t care for themselves.
Tijuana Retirement Home We have been home for a month now, but the ministry continues. God has started (and is growing) a small group of believers in the community in which we built the house. They have been meeting faithfully each week with Pastor Israel (from Iglesia Cristiana Bethel). Our prayer is that God will grow a strong and thriving church in this community. My hope is that God will use us more in this process, and will expand Calvary Baptist’s ministry to Tijuana, Mexico. I believe that God is working in the hearts of many from our congregation, creating an increasing desire to love and serve those in Mexico. Please continue to pray for clarity in discerning God’s direction for our continued in-volvement.
Lastly, thank you for being a part of this outreach to Tijuana. Many of you have been faithful to pray, give, and even go. The family of God is truly just that… a family! I am thankful to serve Him alongside you. May God continue to expand His kingdom, using us in the process.
